This past Saturday I trekked through the frozen tundra, fondly known as Chicago, to a plus size model casting call for Full Figured Fashion Week 2014. While I have absolutely ZERO experience as a runway model, my best girlfriend convinced me it would be a good experience no matter what the outcome and would also introduce me to some fabulous plus size women. It can be very hard to step outside your comfort zone and let your confidence roar, but I'm very glad I did! ----
Since many don't know about FFFWeek, here's a short bio on the event from their website:
"Full Figured Fashion Week® (FFFWeek) launched in New York City with a partnership of 12 brands and approximately 200 guests attending three small events and one large runway show. Now in its sixth year, the event’s offering has expanded to include over 100 partners, including sponsors, independent designers, retailers, boutiques, fashion bloggers, small businesses and other industry professionals. We now offer over 20 events and 4 runway shows featuring an array of fashion from top retailers, boutiques and independent designers worn by 50 of the top runway models across the country. What began as a bold first step in support of the plus size fashion movement has evolved into a breakthrough fashion event."
After arriving, I signed a few forms, turned in my photos, changed out of my snow boots and into my heels, met the judges and did my best runway strut with lighting and cameras all around! After a little waiting, I did an on-camera interview with another judge, who asked me questions about my plus size experiences. Everyone was so positive, friendly and absolutely gorgeous!
I ultimately was not chosen to model, but I did get to meet the founder of the event herself, Gwen DeVoe! She was confident, inspiring and hilarious. We had a great conversation about how far the plus size community has come in just the past few years and where this event can take it in the future!
One other fabulous thing that came out of this experience were these Seychelles beauties. The casting call required you to wear 3 to 4 inch heels, which I, as a dedicated flat wearer of late, have absolutely none of anymore.
